Product Designer

🌍 Remote / Flexible 📄 Contract / Freelance 🎨 Design Team

About Altaz

Altaz is an AI Enablement and Security Compliance firm dedicated to "Elevating Purpose and Accelerating Impact." We specialize in empowering purpose-driven organizations—including non-profits, veteran-owned, and women-owned businesses—with the technology they need to stay efficient, competitive, and secure.

At Altaz, we believe that great technology starts with the user. We focus on user experience first, developing appropriate AI and security solutions that directly achieve critical business requirements.

Role Overview

We are looking for a Product Designer who brings together a deep sense of visual craft, strong user empathy, and the ability to communicate ideas in ways that inspire both clients and engineers. You will take ownership of the design process from initial discovery through to handoff — defining how people experience our products at every touchpoint.

This role sits at the heart of Altaz's user-first philosophy. While you will collaborate closely with the Software Engineer (UI/UX) who leads implementation, your focus is on the quality and integrity of the user experience itself — the flows, the visual language, the feel. You should be equally comfortable in Figma mapping a complex user journey and in a stakeholder meeting presenting your rationale with conviction.

Key Responsibilities

  • User Research & Discovery: Work with stakeholders to understand business requirements, user goals, and pain points. Translate findings into clear design briefs and problem statements.
  • User Flow & Journey Mapping: Define end-to-end user flows for new features and products, identifying opportunities to simplify and delight at every step.
  • Wireframing & Prototyping: Create wireframes, low-fidelity concepts, and high-fidelity interactive prototypes in Figma (or equivalent) to communicate and validate design decisions.
  • Visual Design: Develop polished, aesthetically compelling screen designs that reflect Altaz's brand values and set a high bar for visual quality, consistency, and accessibility.
  • Stakeholder Presentations: Present design concepts and user flows to clients and internal stakeholders with clarity and confidence. Gather feedback, iterate, and build alignment before handoff.
  • Engineering Collaboration: Work alongside the Software Engineer (UI/UX) and broader engineering team to ensure designs are implemented faithfully. Provide annotated specs, assets, and design guidance throughout development.
  • Design System Contribution: Help establish and maintain a shared component library and visual design system to ensure consistency across products.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Proven portfolio demonstrating end-to-end product design work — from user research and flows through to polished visual design.
  • Expert proficiency in Figma or equivalent design tools (Adobe XD, Sketch, Framer, or Penpot).
  • Strong command of user-centered design (UCD) principles, interaction design, and information architecture.
  • Demonstrated ability to create aesthetically compelling, accessible, and on-brand interfaces.
  • Experience presenting and defending design decisions to stakeholders and clients, incorporating feedback constructively.
  • Foundational coding awareness — enough to understand technical constraints, review implementations, and communicate clearly with engineers. Hands-on coding is not a primary requirement of this role.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills; able to articulate the 'why' behind design decisions.
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams independently and deliver to agreed timelines.

Nice to Have

  • Experience designing for AI-powered products or data-rich interfaces.
  • Knowledge of WCAG accessibility standards and inclusive design practices.
  • Motion design or micro-interaction experience (e.g. Lottie, Principle, Framer).
  • Familiarity with HTML and CSS sufficient to inspect and communicate implementation details.
  • Experience contributing to or building a design system from scratch.
  • Background in brand identity or marketing design alongside product work.
"At Altaz, design is not decoration — it is strategy. We are looking for a designer who sees user experience as the most important product decision, and who has the craft and the voice to make that case every single day."
